Chevrolet EV models, like the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, have already made quite the splash in Buffalo. But the future is about to be even more electrified, thanks to an announced GM and Honda partnership. These automakers are teaming up to streamline, among other things, the production of GM and Honda batteries for the purpose of producing a more affordable EV lineup.
What is the purpose of the GM and Honda partnership? The stated purpose is to produce more affordable EV models priced under $30,000 by making the production of GM and Honda batteries more economical. The starting MSRPs of the current Chevrolet EV models, the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, are priced just over $30.000. Other automakers often price their EVs higher, as these vehicles can be expensive to produce. Here’s what the automakers had to say:
GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra – “GM and Honda will share our best technology, design and manufacturing strategies to deliver affordable and desirable EVs on a global scale, including our key markets in North America, South America and China.”
Toshihiro Mibe, Honda president and CEO – “Honda and GM will build on our successful technology collaboration to help achieve a dramatic expansion in the sales of electric vehicles.”
At the core of the GM and Honda partnership is Honda’s interior and exterior designs and GM’s Ultium battery platform. This battery platform is significantly less expensive to manufacture. And, as long as GM and Honda batteries are economically produced, it is far easier to make an affordable EV. In fact, two Honda EV models, coming out in 2024, are already being built with the Ultium battery platform and being assembled in GM factories. The new lineups of affordable EV models produced under the partnership will be released in 2027.
Thanks in part to the Ultium platform, the current Chevrolet EV models are already pretty affordable compared to EVs produced by other automakers. Here’s a list of the current Chevy EV lineup:
What’s more? An Equinox EV is also in the works. It will likely hit showrooms in the fall of 2023.
