If you’re having trouble starting your vehicle or you are unable to turn the key in the ignition, a locked steering wheel could be the culprit. You may have even locked the steering wheel without intending to do so. A locked steering wheel isn’t anything to be worried about. It is easy to fix the issue and get back out on the roads of Buffalo and Cheektowaga. Learn how to unlock a steering wheel below in this guide below from the automotive experts at Joe Basil Chevrolet.

How to Unlock a Steering Wheel in No Time

Not sure how to unlock a steering wheel? Don’t worry! You should be able to unlock a steering wheel in just a few minutes.

  • Pull the wheel down in the same direction you did to lock the steering wheel. If you locked the steering wheel unintentionally and are not sure which direction is correct, try both. The wheel will move slightly when you pull it in the right direction.
  • While holding your steering wheel in the right direction, insert your key into the ignition and start the engine.
  • If the steering wheel is still locked or the engine doesn’t start, try repeating the step above by going in the other direction.
  • This should unlock your steering wheel, so you are all good to go!

Unlocking a Steering Wheel the Correct Way

If you try to unlock your steering wheel incorrectly, it could cause damage to your vehicle. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Do not use excessive force: Using excessive force to unlock a steering wheel could damage parts of the steering mechanism. Use only light pressure to perform the steps above.
  • Try using an alternate key: If you can’t turn the key, it may not be due to a locked steering wheel. The key itself could be the issue. If the key is worn down, it may not be able to engage the car’s tumblers. If this is the case, the team at Joe Basil Chevrolet can make you a new key.
